Jyoti Sihag defeats Olympic medallist in the 53 kg category as Noida hosts PWL matches after seven years
The fifth stage of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) is being held in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, after a gap of seven years. Haryana has traditionally been a powerhouse in wrestling, and once again, the league is witnessing the dominance of wrestlers from the state. Although Olympic medallist Aman Sehrawat’s team suffered a second consecutive defeat on Sunday night, Haryana wrestlers impressed with their individual performances.
In Sunday’s Match Aman Sehrawat’s team, Mumbai Tigers, lost to the Maharashtra team, marking their second straight defeat in the league. Despite the loss, Aman Sehrawat maintained his strong presence and delivered an excellent performance in his individual bout, securing a convincing victory. The Olympic medallist showcased his technical skills and aggressive style, winning praise from wrestling fans, even though his team could not register an overall win.
A major highlight of the night for Haryana came from Hisar district’s Jyoti Sihag, who competed in the 53 kg category for the Mumbai team. Jyoti produced a memorable performance by defeating Cuba-born Olympic medallist Guzman Lopez, representing the Maharashtra team. Her victory drew significant attention, as it marked the second time in PWL history that a Haryana wrestler has defeated a female wrestler who had won a silver medal at the Olympic Games.
Wrestlers from Haryana’s Jhajjar and Hisar districts continue to assert their dominance in the league. Haryana is widely regarded as the nursery of wrestling in India, and the ongoing PWL season has once again reinforced this reputation. As the matches continue in Noida, strong performances from Haryana wrestlers are expected in the upcoming bouts.
