Two relatives, an uncle and his nephew, were killed after being struck by a train while crossing a railway bridge in Haryana’s Yamunanagar. The tragic accident occurred near the railway bridge built over the Western Yamuna Canal when the victims were on their way to buy food.
According to police, three youths were walking across the bridge when the Bikaner Express approached from behind. One of them managed to jump to safety at the last moment, but 31-year-old Mohammad Murad and his 19-year-old nephew Mohammad Afzal were hit by the train. The impact was so severe that both bodies were badly mutilated.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Murad, a resident of Darbhanga in Bihar, and Mohammad Afzal, a resident of Chhapar village in Karnal district. Murad was married and the father of six children, including four daughters and two sons.
Murad’s mother, Begum Khatoon, said she had recently travelled from Bihar and was staying with her daughters in Haryana. A few days earlier, she, Murad, and Murad’s friend Max had moved from Karnal’s Chhapar village to Todarpur village in Yamunanagar’s Jathlana area. Afzal had also joined them there from Karnal.
The family was scheduled to return to Bihar by train on Thursday and had reached Yamunanagar railway station for the journey. Begum Khatoon said Murad left his mobile phone at the station for charging and told her he was going to get food along with Afzal and Max. He promised to return shortly with meals for everyone.
After waiting for a long time, she became worried when the three did not return. Nearly two hours later, Max rushed back to the station with a head injury and informed her that they had been involved in a train accident. He then took her to the Government Railway Police (GRP) station, where officers confirmed that two youths had been struck and killed by a train.
Police have initiated proceedings and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
