The 72nd Women’s Senior National Kabaddi Championship got underway at the Balayogi Stadium on Tuesday, with several teams registering convincing victories on the opening day of the four-day tournament. The championship, which began on January 27, will conclude on January 30 and features participation from top players across the country.

Day 1 witnessed eight matches played across Pools A to H. Teams that opened their campaigns with wins included Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh. The early results indicated a clear dominance by several traditional powerhouses of women’s kabaddi.

In Pool A, Delhi recorded a comprehensive 61–14 win over Jammu & Kashmir. Himachal Pradesh began their campaign on a positive note in Pool B, defeating Assam 49–24. Rajasthan secured a comfortable 44–21 victory against hosts Telangana in Pool C, while Haryana delivered a dominant performance in Pool D with a 62–16 win over Jharkhand.

Tamil Nadu registered a 57–26 win against Uttarakhand in Pool F. Chandigarh produced one of the biggest wins of the day in Pool G, defeating West Bengal 72–19. The closest contest came in Pool E, where Chhattisgarh edged past Kerala 43–36. Karnataka closed the day with the most emphatic result, overpowering Manipur 100–8 in Pool H.

Several players stood out with strong individual performances. Karnataka’s Hamshitha GM and Harshitha M scored 15 and 14 raid points respectively. Tamil Nadu’s Karthika R emerged as the top scorer of the day with 18 raid points, while Chhattisgarh’s Chhaya contributed 16 raid points. Pushpa of Himachal Pradesh and Raj Rani of Haryana also impressed by recording Super 10s.

The championship features 378 players from 28 teams, including state associations and institutional units. With many members of India’s Women’s Kabaddi World Cup–winning squad in action, the tournament is expected to play an important role in assessing combinations ahead of the Asian Games later this year.
