Over 190 para archers from more than 20 states participate; blind archery included at the national level for the first time
The Para National Archery Championship 2026 has begun with great enthusiasm at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala. Organised under the aegis of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the prestigious national event is witnessing the participation of top para archers, including Paris Paralympics 2024 gold medallist Harvinder Singh and bronze medallist Sheetal Devi. The championship is being hosted by the Punjab Archery Association and will continue from January 30 to February 2.
More than 190 para archers from over 20 states across the country are competing in the championship, reflecting the growing popularity and expanding base of para archery in India. The event features several distinguished athletes such as Padma Shri awardee Harvinder Singh, Arjuna Award winner Rakesh Kumar, and Arjuna Awardee and Paralympic bronze medallist Sheetal Devi, along with other international-level players, making the competition highly competitive and exciting.
One of the key highlights of this national championship is the special classification drive being conducted for emerging para archers. This initiative aims to provide new and upcoming players with an opportunity to enter the national and international competitive circuit. In another historic step for the sport, blind archery has been included for the first time at the National Championship level, marking a significant milestone in the development of para archery in India.
National para archery coach Abhilasha Chaudhary stated that the championship serves as an important platform for both experienced international athletes and young talents to showcase their skills. She emphasized that such events play a crucial role in identifying and nurturing future national and international players.
Padma Shri awardee and Paralympic champion Harvinder Singh highlighted the remarkable growth in participation over the years, recalling that the number of competitors was very limited when he first competed in the Para Nationals in 2016. He noted that increased media coverage and awareness have encouraged more para athletes to take up the sport. Paralympic bronze medallist Sheetal Devi also praised the excellent weather and vibrant atmosphere at NIS Patiala, describing the championship as inspiring for young athletes.
Overall, the Para National Archery Championship 2026 is not just a competitive sporting event, but a strong step forward in promoting inclusivity, talent development, and the continued growth of para sports in India.
