Google has rolled out a major update for its users, allowing Gmail account holders to change their email username. This means the part before “@gmail.com” can now be customized as per user preference. The feature is currently available to all users in the United States.
According to Google, work on this update began last year to ensure that user accounts can evolve over time without losing data or accessibility.
How the New Feature Works
With this update, users can modify their Gmail username while keeping their account, data, and history intact. Google has assured that all emails, photos, and messages will remain safe and unchanged.
Once the username is updated, the old email address will continue to function as an alternate address. This means emails sent to both the old and new addresses will be received in the same inbox.
Users will also be able to log into other Google services such as Google Maps, YouTube, Google Drive, and Google Play using either the old or new email address.
Limitations on Username Changes
Google has set certain restrictions for this feature:
- Users can change their email username only once per year
- A maximum of three changes is allowed overall
- Users can revert to their old email address if desired
Steps to Change Gmail Username
- Open Google Account settings
- Go to the “Personal Info” section
- Click on “Email”
- Select “Google Account email”
- If available, click on “Change Google Account email”
- Enter the new username and save
Google has advised users to back up their data before making any changes.
