In a significant move to intensify action against organized crime, the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar to implement an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based policing system. The initiative aims to build a structured database of criminals and strengthen key operations such as "Gangster Te Vaar" (War Against Gangsters) and “War Against Drugs,” with the objective of dismantling gangster networks operating within and outside the state.

Under this collaboration, the state government, along with IIT Ropar, will deploy AI tools to enable Punjab Police to effectively map and target criminal networks. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences and IIT Ropar. The data intelligence and technical support unit established at AIIMS Mohali will coordinate among various stakeholders to advance the project.

As part of the initiative, IIT Ropar will develop advanced software featuring data analytics, voice recognition technology, and dashboard-based monitoring systems. This will enable real-time tracking and intelligence-driven policing, including action against gangster networks operating from abroad.

The project will also help the Punjab Police create a comprehensive and integrated criminal database by combining both structured and unstructured data. Scanned PDFs and handwritten records will be digitized and made accessible on a single platform, allowing quick access to fragmented information and improving operational efficiency.
