India’s Abhay Singh delivered a brilliant performance at the prestigious El Gouna Open, staging a remarkable comeback to defeat Egypt’s world No. 13 Aly Abou Eleinen in a thrilling five-game encounter in the men’s opening round of the PSA Platinum event. After losing the first game 9-11, Abhay bounced back strongly to level the match with an 11-8 win in the second.
The match witnessed intense momentum swings as Eleinen dominated the third game 11-3, capitalizing on Abhay’s errors. However, the Indian star showed great resilience under pressure. Trailing 1-2, Abhay reset his game brilliantly in the fourth, attacking aggressively to claim it 11-4 and force a decider.
The final game turned into a nail-biting contest, with Abhay trailing 3-7 at one stage. Displaying exceptional composure and fighting spirit, he mounted a sensational comeback to clinch the game 11-8 and seal a memorable victory. World No. 25 Abhay will now face Egypt’s sixth seed and world No. 7 Youssef Ibrahim in the next round.
In the women’s draw, young Indian talent Anahat Singh bowed out after a spirited performance against world No. 1 Hania El Hammamy. Despite the loss, the 18-year-old showcased immense promise, fighting back strongly in the third game to stay in contention.
However, El Hammamy’s experience proved decisive in crucial moments, as she secured a 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8 victory. While Anahat’s campaign ended, her fearless display once again highlighted her rising stature on the global stage.
