Dominant performance in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle categories, clinches 16 medals overall
Chandigarh University (CU) delivered a historic performance at the All-India Inter-University Wrestling Greco-Roman and Freestyle Championship 2025–26 by winning the Overall Championship titles in both categories. The university’s wrestlers claimed a total of 16 medals, including 11 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals, establishing CU as the most dominant force in the tournament.
In the Greco-Roman category, Chandigarh University finished first overall with an impressive haul of six gold and one bronze medal. Lovely Professional University secured second place, while Kurukshetra University finished third. CU wrestlers produced commanding performances across weight categories, with gold medals won by Kapil Dalal (60 kg), Saurabh (67 kg), Umesh (82 kg), Prince (87 kg) and Hardeep (130 kg). Several of these bouts ended in one-sided victories, highlighting the technical excellence and physical strength of CU grapplers.
The university continued its dominance in the Freestyle category, where it once again emerged as overall champion. CU won five gold, three silver and one bronze medal to top the standings. Tushar (61 kg), Deepanshu (65 kg) and Paras (79 kg) were among the standout performers, securing gold medals with convincing victories. Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) Rohtak finished second, while Lovely Professional University had to settle for third place in the Freestyle category.
The prestigious five-day national championship was held from January 5 to 9 under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and was hosted by Chandigarh University. The event witnessed participation from more than 200 universities across the country, with over 2,700 wrestlers competing in more than 2,000 bouts across 20 weight categories. Despite intense competition and challenging winter conditions, CU wrestlers displayed discipline, resilience and tactical maturity to secure top honours.
Congratulating the wrestlers on their outstanding achievement, Deepinder Singh Sandhu, Senior Managing Director, Chandigarh University, said the victory was a proud moment for the institution. He added that Chandigarh University remains committed to promoting traditional sports like wrestling by providing world-class infrastructure, expert coaching and scholarships to nurture young talent and help them progress from grassroots to the international stage.
