Suffered rib injury during the first match; bowled five overs and came out to bat despite the injury
Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand after sustaining a rib injury during the first match, played on Sunday in Vadodara. A senior official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told news agency PTI that Sundar complained of pain in the lower ribs on the left side, following which his condition was assessed by the medical team. Considering the injury, the team management decided to keep him out of the remainder of the series.
During the match, Washington Sundar bowled five overs and conceded 27 runs. He felt a strain in his ribs while New Zealand were batting and subsequently walked off the field. He did not return for fielding after that. Indian captain Shubman Gill had also confirmed the injury during the post-match press conference, stating that Sundar was not completely comfortable after getting hurt and therefore could not continue on the field.
Despite the injury, Sundar showed great determination by coming out to bat for India. He stitched together a crucial partnership with KL Rahul, scoring 27 runs off just 16 balls. The partnership played an important role in stabilising the Indian innings at a time when wickets were falling at regular intervals.
The 26-year-old all-rounder has been an important member of the Indian squad in recent times, contributing with both bat and ball. His injury comes as a setback for the team management, especially in the middle of an important series. As of now, the BCCI has not made any official announcement regarding his replacement. The medical team is closely monitoring his recovery and a rehabilitation plan will be decided based on his progress and upcoming fixtures
