CU Punjab Holds Seminar on “Basics of Intellectual Property Rights for Innovators & Entrepreneurs”

The Intellectual Property Management and Commercialization Cell (IPMCC), Institutions Innovation Council (IIC), and International Relations Cell (IRC) of Central University of Punjab organized a seminar on “Basics of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Its Importance for Innovators & Entrepreneurs.”

The session featured Dr. Ruchi Singla, Indian Patent Agent and Director & CEO of RAS Intellect Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Mohali, as the invited speaker. More than 200 participants including students and research scholars attended the session

The programme began with a welcome address by Prof. Raj Kumar, Incharge, Centre for Innovation and Leadership, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Natural Products. Prof. Anjana Munshi, Director, Research and Development, emphasized the importance of IPR in today’s knowledge-based economy, noting that protecting innovations is essential for research, creativity, and fair recognition.

Dr. Ruchi Singla, an IIM Kolkata alumna and certified Canadian Patent Administrator, shared her experience in patent filing, IP strategy, and entrepreneurship. She explained the role of IPR for startups and SMEs, offering strategies to protect innovations and enhance business value. Real-life examples like Bisleri vs. Aquapeya and the Nexavar-Natco case illustrated how intellectual property works in practice. She also discussed RAS Intellect’s support under the Startup India Intellectual Property Protection (SIPP) Scheme, which helps startups file patents at low cost and provides guidance on IP strategy. The seminar highlighted how patents can support product development, innovation, and business growth.

Dr. Monisha Dhiman, Director IQAC and President IIC, briefed participants on “Know Your IIC and IPMCC”, and the session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Preeti Khetarpal, Organizing Secretary. The seminar helped students, researchers, and entrepreneurs understand the basics of IPR and learn practical ways to protect and use their innovations effectively.
