Neeraj Ghaywan’s film makes it to the International Feature Film shortlist, marking a proud moment for India
Indian cinema has once again made its presence felt on the global stage as ‘Homebound’ advanced to the next round of voting in the International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards 2026. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced that fifteen films from around the world have been shortlisted in this category, with India’s ‘Homebound’ earning a coveted place among them.
The shortlisted films represent countries including Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Norway, Palestine, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Tunisia. Announcing the update, The Academy shared a post on its official social media handle stating, “Fifteen films advanced to the next round of voting in the International Feature Film category. Here’s where they land on the map…”
‘Homebound’ has already garnered significant international acclaim, having premiered at some of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, and Melbourne International Film Festival. Its inclusion in the Oscar shortlist marks a rare and notable milestone, making it the fifth Indian film to be shortlisted for Best International Feature Film in the 98-year history of the Academy Awards.
Starring Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, ‘Homebound’ is among the 15 films now eligible for final nominations in the International Feature Film category at the Oscars 2026. Ishaan Khatter shared the proud moment on his Instagram stories, celebrating the film’s achievement and its recognition on a global platform.
The film tells the story of childhood friends Shoaib (Ishaan Khatter) and Chandan (Vishal Jethwa), whose shared dream of joining the police force shapes their lives and choices. Set against the realities and pressures faced by young India, the narrative is rooted in friendship, ambition, and duty. Janhvi Kapoor adds emotional depth to the story with her pivotal role.
Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, ‘Homebound’ is produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, and Apoorva Mehta, and co-produced by Marijke deSouza and Melita Toscan Du Plantier. Renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese and Pravin Khairnar serve as Executive Producers.
According to AMPAS, films from 86 countries and regions were eligible in the International Feature Film category this year. The final nominations for the Academy Awards 2026 will be announced on Thursday, January 22, with ‘Homebound’ standing as a strong contender and a moment of pride for Indian cinema.
