Farmers in Punjab, upset over the delay in wheat procurement in mandis, had announced a “Rail Roko” protest today. However, the agitation has now been postponed for three days as part of a strategic decision.
Kisan leader Sarvan Singh Pandher stated that the decision to defer the protest was taken after careful planning. He also expressed strong dissatisfaction with the government’s approach, alleging that farmers’ concerns are not being taken seriously.
Pandher highlighted that unseasonal rains and hailstorms have already damaged the crops, yet the government has not shown urgency in starting procurement. As a result, wheat lying in mandis is deteriorating, and farmers are facing price cuts.
The farmers have demanded immediate commencement of procurement, resolution of the shortage of gunny bags (bardana), and proper basic facilities in the mandis.
