Today is World Autism Awareness Day, In an inspiring story of determination and innovation, Dr. Sunil Bansal, a Staff Scientist at the Lombardi Cancer Centre, Georgetown University, along with his wife Dr. Shivani Bansal, has turned a personal challenge into a global mission to support families dealing with autism.

Originally from Karnal, the couple’s identical twin sons, Sanskar and Satvik Bansal, were born on November 30, 2021, in Virginia.

Early Diagnosis Brings Major Challenge

The couple began noticing developmental concerns in their sons as early as 13 months of age, including poor eye contact, lack of response to names, minimal social interaction, and delayed speech.

By September 2023, when the twins were just 21.5 months old, both Indian and US experts diagnosed them with Severe Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Describing the moment, the parents said their world was “turned upside down,” but instead of losing hope, they chose to approach the situation scientifically.

A New Approach Beyond Traditional Therapy

Drawing on their scientific backgrounds, the couple conducted an extensive review of global autism research, therapy models, and alternative systems including Ayurveda, homeopathy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

They concluded that traditional clinic-based therapies alone were insufficient and designed a family-driven, home-centered, intensive intervention model.

Their home was transformed into a comprehensive learning and therapy space, incorporating:

  • Reading and learning zones
  • Sports and activity areas
  • Library and game sections
  • Structured worksheets and interactive learning tools

For nearly 11 months, the parents dedicated up to 14 hours daily working closely with their children.

Remarkable Progress at Just 4 Years

Today, at around four years of age, Sanskar and Satvik have shown extraordinary developmental progress:

Academics:

  • Performing at the level of children aged 6+
  • Able to read English books independently
  • Skilled in writing, spelling, and early mathematics

Communication:

  • Comparable to that of typical 7-year-old children

Physical Development:

  • On par with 5-year-old children

Both children are now enrolled in regular schools, studying alongside neurotypical peers.

Global Recognition and Records

The twins have also achieved international recognition:

  • Sanskar Bansal: 5 world records and an award from the America Book of Records
  • Satvik Bansal: 3 world records from the same organization
  • Both named “Top Talent of the Year 2024”

Their achievements include:

  • Spelling 743 English words at just 2.5 years
  • Becoming the youngest to solve a 46-piece USA map puzzle
  • Recognition as “Child Prodigies” by the World Book of Records

Their journey has also been featured by the Autism Around the Globe.

Launch of ‘Autism Blessings’ to Help Families Worldwide

Motivated by their experience, the couple has launched a global initiative, “Autism Blessings,” aimed at supporting families navigating autism.

The platform offers:

  • Structured home-based programs
  • Parent training and mentoring
  • Customized strategies tailored to each child

Currently, the initiative is connected with around 800 families globally and actively guiding over 100 families.

A Message of Hope

Through their journey, Dr. Sunil and Dr. Shivani Bansal emphasize that labels like “severe autism” are not definitive outcomes. They advocate for early, structured, and parent-driven interventions, stressing that empowered families can significantly accelerate a child’s development.

Their story stands as a powerful example of resilience, scientific thinking, and the transformative impact of dedicated parenting.
