Chandigarh University Hosts All-India Inter-University Wrestling Championship 2025–26
Over 2,700 Wrestlers from 200+ Universities Compete in Five-Day National Event
Chandigarh University, Mohali, Punjab, successfully hosted the All-India Inter-University Wrestling Greco-Roman and Freestyle (Men) Championship 2025–26, drawing participation from more than 2,700 wrestlers representing over 200 universities from across the country. Organized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the prestigious five-day national championship witnessed over 1,000 bouts across 20 weight categories in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, showcasing intense, power-packed performances by some of India’s best university grapplers.
The championship was graced by Olympic bronze medallist, Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Yogeshwar Dutt as the Chief Guest, while Arjuna Awardee and professional kabaddi player Manjeet Chillar attended as the Guest of Honour, adding prestige to the event.
On the opening day, Chandigarh University’s wrestler Hardeep delivered a dominant performance in the Greco-Roman 130 kg final, defeating Nitin of PU Gujarat by a convincing 8–0 margin to clinch the gold medal. In the same weight category, Shakti from Gautam Budh University, Noida, and Sachin from RIMT Gobindgarh secured bronze medals after winning their respective bouts.
In freestyle wrestling, Chandigarh University’s Tushar impressed with a one-sided victory over Kapil of JMAU Kota, Rajasthan, winning the 61 kg final by 11–0 points to claim the gold medal. Bronze medals in the category were won by Kartik of MDU Haryana and Pushap of PU Chandigarh. In another notable bout, Vansh from RRBM Alwar, Rajasthan, defeated Bapu Saheb of RCV Belagavi by 8–0 in the Greco-Roman 97 kg category.
Speaking on the occasion, Deepinder Singh Sandhu, Senior Managing Director of Chandigarh University, said wrestling is an integral part of India’s cultural heritage. He highlighted the university’s commitment to nurturing young athletes through world-class infrastructure and comprehensive sports scholarships, helping them progress from grassroots training to international platforms.
