Team India’s Mindset Changed After 2022 Defeat, Enters Fourth Consecutive ICC Final

India becomes the most successful team in white-ball cricket with two titles in 3.5 years

The crushing defeat against England in the T20 World Cup semifinal on November 10, 2022, forced Indian cricket to rethink its approach. In that match played in Adelaide, India posted a total of 169 runs while batting first. However, England openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales chased the target without losing a wicket in just 16 overs. The defeat was not merely the loss of a match, but it also exposed the flaws in India’s cautious and slow batting approach, which had often proved costly in high-pressure games.

After the match, Indian captain Rohit Sharma had an important conversation with wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik. Rohit reportedly said, “We need to change.” That moment became a turning point, eventually transforming the mindset and strategy of the Indian team in the years that followed.

Today, on March 8, 2026, the scenario looks completely different. Over the past three and a half years, the ICC has organized four major white-ball tournaments, and Team India has reached the final in all four. While India finished runner-up in one tournament, the team managed to lift the trophy twice, marking a remarkable phase in its recent history. Now, India will take the field against New Zealand with the aim of winning its third consecutive title.

The biggest area of improvement since 2022 has been India’s batting approach, particularly the scoring rate in the early overs. Earlier, Indian batters focused heavily on preserving wickets during the first six overs, which often resulted in slow starts. In the 2022 semifinal, India managed only 38 runs in the powerplay and had reached just 80 runs by the end of 13 overs.

In that match, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya played crucial knocks to take India to a competitive total of 168. Hardik scored 63 runs off 33 balls, while Kohli contributed 50 runs from 40 deliveries. Despite their efforts, England’s openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales dominated the chase, scoring 63 runs in the powerplay and turning the match into a one-sided contest.

However, the lessons learned from that defeat changed India’s approach significantly. Today, Team India plays a far more aggressive brand of cricket and has consistently reached the finals of major tournaments, firmly establishing itself as one of the strongest white-ball teams in the world.
