Former India pacer believes the franchise is preparing for a smooth transition as Dhoni nears final IPL season

In what could signal the beginning of a new era for Chennai Super Kings, former India pacer Irfan Pathan has suggested that Sanju Samson is the ideal candidate to take over the legacy of MS Dhoni at the franchise.
Speaking ahead of IPL 2026, Pathan highlighted that Dhoni, who has led Chennai Super Kings to five titles, appears to be nearing the end of his illustrious career. According to him, CSK’s decision to bring Samson into the squad is a clear indication of long-term planning.
Pathan emphasized that Samson is not only a proven performer but also someone fans can easily connect with. The wicketkeeper-batter is coming off a sensational run, having been named Player of the Tournament in India’s victorious 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup campaign. His consistent performances and improved maturity make him a strong contender to become the face of CSK in the coming years.
“Sanju Samson is the kind of player around whom you can build a team. He has the caliber, the temperament, and the connect with fans. If Dhoni is looking to pass on the baton, Samson fits perfectly into that role,” Pathan said.
The former all-rounder also reflected on Dhoni’s evolving role within the team. In recent seasons, Dhoni has been batting lower down the order, often coming in for just the final overs. While this strategy once worked effectively, Pathan noted that age and fitness concerns, including Dhoni’s knee issues, have impacted his finishing abilities.
He pointed out that there have been instances where Dhoni, once known as the ultimate finisher, has struggled to close out games — something rarely seen during his peak years. Pathan believes that if Dhoni continues to play this season, he should take on more responsibility with the bat and look to contribute for at least four to five overs.
