Government reviews projects, directs agencies to fast-track construction, equipment and approvals

Punjab Newsline, Chandigarh -

The Haryana Government on Friday reviewed the progress of multiple government medical colleges across the state and issued strict directions to executing agencies to adhere to timelines and expedite pending works, as it moves to expand medical infrastructure and increase MBBS seats in addition to providing easily accessible tertiary health care services to the public.

Additional Chief Secretary, Medical Education and Research Department, Dr. Sumita Misra chaired the 30th meeting of the Monitoring and Supervisory Committee for Medical Education and Research (MSMER) in Chandigarh. Officials were directed to ensure time-bound completion of civil works, procurement of equipment, and recruitment of faculty.

Government Medical Colleges at Kaithal and Yamunanagar, both nearing 80 per cent completion, have been given a deadline of June 30, 2026. Authorities have been asked to simultaneously initiate procurement of biomedical equipment and furniture, and obtain all necessary approvals from the National Medical Commission to enable MBBS admissions from the 2027–28 academic session.

During the meeting, it was apprised that Government Medical College, Jind, where construction has slowed due to pending approval of revised financial estimates, officials have been directed to follow up the case with Finance Department.

Government Medical College, Sirsa, currently at about 35 per cent completion, has been assigned a target of March 31, 2027. The committee also highlighted concerns regarding drinking water supply and storm water management at the site. Dr. Sumita Misra directed that these issues be resolved at the earliest.

It was apprised in the meeting that the main campus at Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya University of Health Sciences, Kutail, Karnal has been completed, work on the private ward project—estimated at Rs. 30.45 crore—remains at around 30 per cent. The executing agency has been directed to accelerate construction to meet the September 30, 2026 deadline.

For three institutions — University of Health Sciences, Kutail; Pt. Neki Ram Sharma Government Medical College; and Maharishi Chyawan Government Medical College Koriawas where 100 MBBS students are already enrolled for 2025–26, it was decided that a Committee be constituted to negotiate with original equipment manufacturers so that maintenance works can be awarded. These will cover critical infrastructure such as HVAC systems, lifts, DG sets, electrical substations and water treatment plants, especially as defect liability periods near expiry.

Expansion works at Bhagat Phool Singh Government Medical College for Women at Khanpur Kalan, Sonepat and Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College at Karnal were also reviewed, with directions to ensure timely completion. Dr. Misra emphasised that all arrangements must be completed within strict timelines so that new medical colleges can become operational without delay.
