A shocking case of abuse has surfaced from Amritsar, where a 75-year-old woman was allegedly chained and left outside her home by her son and daughter-in-law for nearly 20 days. Following the incident, the Punjab State Women’s Commission has taken suo motu cognizance and directed strict action against those responsible.
According to reports, a social service organization, Just Sewa Society, had earlier rescued the elderly woman and admitted her to a hospital. Taking serious note of the matter, the Chairperson of the Punjab State Women’s Commission has termed the incident extremely disturbing. The Commission has written to the Deputy Commissioner and Police Commissioner of Amritsar, directing immediate investigation and action under the Senior Citizen Act.
The Commission has instructed the administration to ensure the elderly woman is immediately shifted to a safe place or hospital under the supervision of a senior officer. It has also called for strict legal action against the accused son and daughter-in-law. Additionally, authorities have been asked to submit a detailed action taken report via email by April 20, 2026.
